I don't think competition is meaningful devoid of context. You are competing over something in a defined competitive space.
As for your questions about what to do, I think what I said above leads to the answer; its up to you. I don't know that a universal answer as to what is the proper etiquette in a context free competition is possible.

As far as context, I guess I mean prior context--you know, the whole "who started it" stuff. You're right--conflict takes place in a space and so it has its own context inherently. I was speaking unclearly.
